All About Sump Pumps For Fairbanks Homes
If you don’t want to have to go through foundation problems, mold problems, crawl space repairs, or possibly flooding that reaches your knees, you’ll want to consider installing a sump pump for your Fairbanks basement or other areas of your property around your home.
Flooding can be caused by flash floods or storms which take us by surprise. That much water accumulates quickly on the ground. If it happens too fast, the ground can’t absorb it quick enough. That’s when sump pumps come to the rescue for a lot of homeowners.
Sump pumps in the basement protect the home from moisture problems as well. The basement is below ground, which means it is particularly vulnerable to water infiltration. Since the ground already contains moisture at this level, the basement has to be waterproofed. If waterproofing fails or there’s no way to stop water from getting in, the sump pump takes care of the standing water problem. Let our Fairbanks plumbers at Altrol Heating, Cooling & Plumbing give you some tips.
What Are Sump Pumps?
Sump pumps consist of a small water pump that pumps water from one area to another when it begins to pool. You can find several types for your home. Sump pumps can be installed in just about any location including your yard. That way, when water pools around the foundation in certain areas, the sump pump removes it and routes it away.
A natural french drain system is commonly used for this problem, but they cannot remove the amount of water that a sump pump can. If there is regular flooding, in many cases a sump pump installation is in order.
Some systems, like the submersible pumps, involve a small pit where the sump pump is installed. The concrete is jack hammered to form the pit. A pedestal sump pump does not require a pit but sits on a pedestal instead.
Pedestal Sump Pumps
The pedestal sump pump sits on a short pedestal. It is a non-submersible unit that basically looks and act like the system inside your commode. They are easier and quicker to install and can be installed in more locations. You won’t have to break through the concrete for these, only attach them to a secure base.
Submersible Sump Pumps
Submersible sump pumps are installed into the foundation of the house or in a hole dug in the yard. They are placed in low-lying areas that would flood. The holes or foundation sump pit collects the water where the pump sits. From there it is pumped away.
Flash Flooding & Sump Pumps
When there is a lot of downpour from a storm, a flash-flood can be very dangerous when your home is located in a low-lying area. Installing a sump pump can help pump out the water if the entire home is not submerged in floodwaters.
